How Long Do Clarity Enhanced Diamonds Last?
Not all diamonds are created equally, though some shoppers prefer the "imperfections" both because they are unique and because they aren't as expensive. Diamonds in the VS2 and SI1 categories are popular for this reason. But what happens to all the more seriously flawed, blemished diamonds that stores won't even sell?
What Are Clarity Enhanced Diamonds?
I2 and I3 Diamonds usually have obvious flaws that make them undesirable. Through a treatment process called "Clarity Enhancement", these diamonds can be made to look more presentable. There are two main actions that might be taken:
1. Fracture Filling: Using a type of resin, inclusions can be filled
2. Laser Drilling: Discoloration and other flaws can be cleaned up and virtually erased using various chemicals
What's The Cost Difference?
One of the most appealing parts of this process is the price difference. Clarity Enhanced diamonds can be 30-50 percent cheaper than a natural or lab grown equivalent. Unfortunately, the resale value is next to nothing.
How Long Do Clarity Enhanced Diamonds Last?
This process has impressive results, but comes at a cost. The process of manipulating the color and erasing the flaws involves drilling, heat, chemicals, and other intrusive approaches that can severely damage the integrity of the diamond, which can impact its lifespan. Unlike an untreated diamond, they are more susceptible to damage and pressure, even during a simple cleaning. While in theory, these diamonds are marketed to last forever, exposure to natural elements (sun exposure, daily wear) can mean your diamond loses its luster in just a few short years.
