Welcome to Nazar's & co. Jewelers!

Perhaps one of the most asked questions in the diamond industry is what color diamond is the most expensive. Colored diamonds are the most highly sought out, and for good reason. Not only are they rich in color and beautiful, but they are also very rare. Some colors tend to be rarer than others hence the significantly varying prices.

Types of Colored Diamonds

Diamonds can be found in a rainbow of colors, and here are a few hues:

  • Yellow diamonds
  • Orange diamonds
  • Brown diamonds
  • Green diamonds
  • Blue diamonds
  • Pink diamonds
  • Red diamonds

What is the Most Expensive Color Diamond?

Red diamonds are the most expensive colored diamonds. Currently, only about 20 to 30 exist in the world. These diamonds derive their red shade during the mining formation. The process is uncommon, explaining why red diamonds are rare and extremely small in size.

Interesting fact: It would interest you to know that the largest red diamond ever sold weighed only 5.11 carats and was bought at a whopping $8,000,000.

Red diamonds are very rare and expensive; if red appears as a secondary color or modifier color, the price of the diamond skyrockets.

The Most Famous Cut Red Diamonds

The Moussaieff Red

Previously known as the Red Shield, the Moussaieff Red is said to have been found in the mid-90s by a Brazilian farmer and weighed an impressive 13.90 carats. After the stone was cut into a brilliant triangular cut, it lost 8.79 carats. It has been on display twice at the Natural History Museum of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

Michael Hing, an expert gemologist who saw the diamond in person, said it had a stunning cranberry color and was unlike anything he had ever seen.

The De Young Red

This is the next largest known gemstone in the red hue. It weighs 5.03 carats, has a slight brownish tint, and is a brilliant round cut. The gemstone was initially sold as a garnet due to its misleading hue and is now owned by the Smithsonian Institution Natural History Museum.

Other smaller red diamonds that are widely known include the Halphen Red weighing 0.95 carats with a purplish red hue, and the Rob Red weighing 0.59 carats and said to have the most saturated hue of red ever discovered.
