Diamond Clarity Grades
The American Gem Society (AGS) and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) are the dominant entities that have developed diamond grading charts to offer a clarity grade for each stone.
This chart helps diamond buyers with a better understanding of the diamond’s clarity. In grading the diamonds, five primary factors are crucial: nature, size, location, number, and relief of inclusions.
According to this grading system, the flawless (F) and the internally flawless are the topmost clarity grades. The very, very slightly included (VVS1 and VVS2) follow.
Next, we have the very slightly included (VS1 and VS2). The slightly included (SI1 and SI2) and lastly the included (I1 and I2) close the clarity classification.
What Is A VVS Diamond?
The VVS diamonds are nearly flawless, and the imperfections in these diamonds are only detectable under high magnification. The inclusions you’d find in VVS diamonds are insignificant, such as clouds, pinpoints, feathers, and internal graining.
These minute inclusions are hardly visible at 10x magnification. Diamonds with eye-visible imperfections can’t get a clarity grade of VVS.
VVS1 vs. VVS2 Diamonds
You’ll see the numbers 1 or 2 on the diamond clarity grading scale on each clarity grade. These numbers show the location and size of the imperfections.
For instance, VVS1 has better clarity than VVS2, although the inclusions are difficult to spot with the naked eye. Inclusions in VVS1 are extremely difficult to see, while imperfections in VVS2 are very difficult to spot at 10x magnification.
